Ladies!!
We're back with another Trend Report. Although temps haven't skyrocketed too high just yet, I can't stop thinking of swimwear. And lots of it. One pieces, bikinis, coverups... I want them all!!! I grew up as a bikini girl, but now I am obsessed with one pieces, and I love how popular they are by every company and designer. However, nothing beats a bikini tan. When you look at how far we've come in women's swimwear, you'd be amazed.
In the 1700's modesty was at it's highest, and women wore full on gowns to the beach. Best part? They actually wore weights at the bottom of the gowns to keep them from floating up and from showing leg. Basically, no such thing as tanning or showing of ANY skin. During the early 1800's women's beach wear went from functional, to straight up fashion, wearing gowns known as, "seaside walking dresses" with muslin, long sleeves and antique cuffs. When mid 1800's hit, most of women's bodies still had to be covered, but long bloomers were the trend. As of the late 1800's and early 1900's- sailor style swimwear was all the rage, complete with frilly collars, stocking, or lace up shorts. By 1910 it was all about bare arms and legs. Women ditched the long skirts and while still modest, wore bathing suits that allowed more freedom and movement. Oftentimes, the shorts had to be a particular length to be determined appropriate. By the 20's, 30's, and 40's bathing suits became about flattering the figure, even paying close detail to cuts like sweetheart and rucking. It was during 1946 when the first ever bikini was introduced at a fashion event in Paris. This racy number was even banned in some countries originally. By early 1950's bikinis went mainstream, especially with the help of Brigitte Bardot. During 1960's the SOCal style became huge. Beach party, itsy, bity bikinis were in. 1970's brought in a sexy one piece with a super low cut, while in Brazil the thong was released. in the 80's skimpy bikinis were in with thigh high cuts. With Baywatch making the 90's popular the high cut one piece was still popular but with an even cheekier appearance and the chest more exposed. Now, with a more boy acceptance attitude, companies are designing gorgeous suits of all cuts to support and compliment all body types.
With so many options to choose from, it's hard to choose just one swim suit. I stopped trying. I have several, and I'm sure several more will make their way into my closet soon.
